Virginia Gubernatorial Candidate Ken Cuccinelli Addresses NVTC Board

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, Republican candidate for Virginia governor, joined the NVTC Board of Directors on Tuesday, July 9, at LMI in McLean for a discussion of his campaign. During the meeting, he outlined his priorities and shared his perspective on the most pressing issues facing the Commonwealth. In particular, Cuccinelli described his focus on economic development and maintaining Virginia’s competitiveness.

Responding to questions from Board members, Cuccinelli expressed his desire to offset lower business and personal income taxes by evaluating all non-health and education tax credits and eliminating those that are considered “old or ineffective.” He also stated that, while he does not intend to undo the transportation funding package passed despite his opposition during the 2013 legislative session, he would insist that transportation dollars are spent “to move people and goods as efficiently as possible” and that land use decisions are made on the local level. Cuccinelli also outlined how he would ensure Virginia’s competitiveness in the global marketplace by emphasizing the Port of Virginia, rail infrastructure and low corporate taxes compared to other coastal states.

Cuccinelli addressed the need for Virginia to have a long-term energy strategy, including coal, nuclear and the potential for off-shore drilling. He also discussed the need for a centralized office to focus on workforce development and the importance of private sector partnerships to commercialize intellectual property coming out of the Commonwealth’s universities. Cuccinelli closed by explaining that the single most important measure of his success at the end of his tenure, should he be elected governor, would be momentum on job creation by growing or attracting businesses in the Commonwealth.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe addressed the NVTC Board at its May meeting. NVTC members had the opportunity to hear both candidates for governor discuss their campaigns and priorities at the June 20 at a Tech Town Hall forum, co-hosted by NVTC and Microsoft.
