Jonathan D. Link

Jonathan Link is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Kilpatrick Townsend. Link advises clients on all aspects of patent litigation, pre-litigation disputes, patent prosecution and client counseling, and his experience spans a wide range of technologies, including computer software and business methods, semiconductors, display panels, wire bond connectors, power control circuits, electric motors and generators, electronic auctions, credit debit and stored value cards, wireless communications, medical devices, sound recording devices and sporting equipment. He received his J.D. from the George Mason University Law School and his B.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois.

Drew Hirshfeld
Senior Advisor and Associate Commissioner for Patent Examination Policy
U.S. Patent and Trademark Office

Drew Hirshfeld serves as both senior advisor for the undersecretary and director and deputy undersecretary and deputy director, and as associate commissioner for patent examination policy. In his capacity as senior advisor, Hirshfeld serves as key liaison to the agency's business units, oversees front office operations and provides counsel to the Office of the Under Secretary on a variety of issues. As associate commissioner for patent examination policy, Hirshfeld serves as the authority on patent laws, rules, and examining practice and procedure, and provides administrative oversight and direction for the activities of the Office of Petitions, Office of Patent Legal Administration, Office of Patent Cooperation Treaty Legal Administration and the Office of Patent Quality Assurance. Further, Hirshfeld establishes patent examination and documentation policy standards for the Commissioner for Patents.

Prior to serving as senior advisor, Hirshfeld was the chief of staff to the undersecretary of commerce for intellectual property and director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Hirshfeld began his career at the USPTO in 1994 as a patent examiner. He became a supervisory patent examiner in 2001, and was promoted to the Senior Executive Service in 2008 as a group director in Technology Center 2100.

Hirshfeld received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Vermont, and a JD from Western New England College School of Law.

Scott D. Malpede
Fitzpatrick Cella Harper & Scinto

Scott Malpede is a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of Fitzpatrick, Cella, Harper & Scinto. Malpede began his career as a patent examiner at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and joined the firm in 1987. He has extensive experience in all aspects of patent prosecution and client counseling covering technologies such as image displays, medical devices, avionics, telecommunications and computers. Malpede is the editor of the firm's PTO Update newsletter. He received his J.D. from the National Law Center at the George Washington University and his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.

Joseph D. Matal
Judiciary Committee Counsel to Senator Jon Kyl

Joe Matal has been a Judiciary Committee counsel to Sen. Jon Kyl from 2002 to the present, except that he served as the Republican general counsel to the committee for Sen. Jeff Sessions when the latter was the ranking member of the committee from 2009-2010. He is a native Californian and graduate of Stanford University and Berkeley Law School, and served as a judicial clerk to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and to the Supreme Court of the State of Alaska. Matal has also worked as an associate attorney at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.
