On Monday May 3rd, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski joined NVTC for the final event in our 2009-2010 Public Policy Series. NVTC Chair Donna Morea, President, CGI, U.S., Europe & Asia, served as the event's MC and Charlie Thomas, CEO of Razorsight, the event's signature platinum sponsor, introduced Chairman Genachowski.

During the discussion, Chairman Genachowski shared how his experience in the private sector technology industry helped shape his opinions about the government's role in providing fundamental infrastructure, such as broadband and spectrum. In particular, he described broadband as critical for economic growth and job creation and an essential platform in solving important national challenges such as energy, healthcare, education and public safety. He explained that the U.S. is lagging globally when compared to other industrialized nations' adoption and growth in broadband.

On the topic of mobility, Chairman Genachowski noted that the demand for mobile spectrum is rising much faster than supply and that how the government manages spectrum allocation is important to attracting innovators and entrepreneurs to mobile technology fields.

During the Q&A portion of the luncheon, Chairman Genachowski elaborated on ways spectrum use leads to innovation by explaining how opening up certain parts of the spectrum made possible the development of the Wi-Fi technology that has become so ubiquitous today. Attendees also sought Genachowski's thoughts on broadband's role in the economic stimulus and increasing broadband access through satellite-based technology.
