NVTC Reception Honoring Jim Duffey and Sam Nixon

On April 22, NVTC hosted a reception honoring Virginia's Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey and CIO Sam Nixon at the Tower Club. The reception boasted an over-capacity packed crowd of more than 150 including some of the region's most powerful technology players and several members of the General Assembly, including: Senator Janet Howell - Delegate Dave Albo - Delegate Barbara Comstock - Delegate Eileen Filler-Corn - Delegate Tag Greason - Delegate Mark Keam - Delegate Jim LeMunyon - Delegate Joe May. Also in attendance were Deputy Secretary of Technology Karen Jackson and Pete Jobse, President and CEO of the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT).
NVTC Chair Donna Morea, President, U.S., Europe & Asia, CGI, served as the event's MC and Stacy Mendler, COO of Alion Science and Technology, the event's gold sponsor, introduced Secretary Duffey and CIO Nixon, who both spoke briefly about their priorities and plans in their new roles.

As Virginia's Secretary of Technology, Jim Duffey is a key advisor to Governor McDonnell on technology policy and oversees CIT and the Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA). In his remarks, he expressed his desire to work with the Northern Virginia technology community on implementing the Governor’s top priority of creating jobs throughout the Commonwealth. He encouraged NVTC members to come to him with ideas to support him and Governor McDonnell in achieving their economic development goals. Secretary Duffey also described his intention of making Virginia a top destination for startups and entrepreneurs through tax incentives and pro-business regulations in order to build on Virginia's reputation as the best state for business.

As Virginia's CIO, Sam Nixon runs VITA, Virginia's consolidated IT organization, which is responsible for the Commonwealth's information security programs, IT infrastructure, technology governance and technology procurement. Speaking to the NVTC audience, he thanked Secretary Duffey for his leadership and explained the important role VITA plays in the operation of and services provided by Virginia's government. Nixon also noted the differences between his previous role as a nine-term member of the House of Delegates and his new role in the McDonnell Administration, where he is responsible for implementing many of the initiatives he helped pass as a legislator.
