Position Description:
The Vice President, Membership Development is a senior leadership role responsible for driving significant revenue growth in the Northern Virginia Technology Council’s (NVTC) membership base—from 500 to 1,000 members—while strengthening overall engagement, retention, and member satisfaction. This role will lead the design and execution of innovative sales and relationship strategies to expand NVTC’s reach across the region’s technology ecosystem, including tech companies and government contractors, investors, universities, and public sector partners. The VP will serve as a key ambassador of NVTC’s mission to foster the growth of Northern Virginia’s innovation economy by building a diverse and dynamic community of members who derive tangible value from their NVTC affiliation.
Critical Duties and Responsibilities
- Membership Revenue Generation: Identify, direct, and coordinate all revenue-generating membership growth opportunities, maintaining hands-on engagement throughout the business development life cycle.
- Acquisition Strategy: Develop and implement NVTC’s comprehensive new member acquisition strategy in key emerging growth areas such as AI, Cyber, Cloud, Space, Quantum, Defense Tech, Fin Tech, Ed Tech, etc.
- Outreach and Conversion: Lead all outreach and conversion activities, including target list development, outbound sales, and seamless onboarding of new members. Leverage multiple communication channels—personal calls, in-person/virtual meetings, email, social media, and in-person networking—often at events in evenings and/or outside of traditional business hours—to convey NVTC’s membership value proposition.
- Relationship Building: Cultivate and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders including board members, prospective and renewing members, and strategic partners to drive increased membership, revenue, and renewal rates.
- Team Leadership: Manage, coach, and inspire a high-performing membership sales team to achieve NVTC’s annual growth goals, with a specific focus on expanding membership from 500 to 1,000 organizations over the next two years.
- Pipeline Management: Maintain an active and accountable pipeline of prospects using NVTC’s CRM system and provide accurate, real-time performance reporting.
- Retention Strategy: Implement a coordinated retention strategy, including a touchpoint calendar and automated email campaigns, to demonstrate NVTC’s value and improve renewal rates.
- Performance Reporting: Track and report membership and revenue metrics to the CEO, COO, Executive Board, and Finance Committee on a monthly basis.
- Marketing Collaboration: Collaborate with the marketing team to design and activate/automate marketing, content, and social media initiatives that highlight the
- value of NVTC membership and generate qualified leads. Leverage digital marketing tools.
- Member Onboarding: Oversee all welcome and onboarding communications and experiences for new members, ensuring consistency across print, digital, and personal follow-up.
- Member Experience: Continuously analyze and refine the member experience—from onboarding through engagement and renewal—to ensure members fully understand and utilize NVTC’s benefits.
- Organizational Alignment: Actively participate in NVTC’s executive leadership meetings and collaborate cross-functionally to align membership growth strategies with all organizational priorities.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in membership development, business development, or corporate partnerships, preferably within a trade association, chamber of commerce, or professional services organization.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing membership recruitment and retention strategies that drive revenue growth and engagement.
- Proven experience cultivating relationships with senior executives, corporate partners, and community leaders.
- Experience managing and motivating a high-performing matrix team.
- Robust familiarity with the Northern Virginia and greater Washington, D.C. technology ecosystem strongly preferred.

Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or a related field required.
- MBA or graduate degree preferred.
Pay:
$120,000 per year base salary plus commission
