Basic Function of the Position

The Director of Membership Development is responsible for driving new member acquisition, supporting revenue growth, and strengthening engagement and retention across NVTC’s membership base. Reporting to the CEO, this role executes NVTC’s membership growth strategy and plays a key role in expanding and diversifying the organization’s community of technology companies, government contractors, investors, universities, and public sector partners. The Director serves as a frontline ambassador of NVTC’s mission to foster the growth of Northern Virginia’s innovation economy by building meaningful relationships and ensuring members derive tangible value from their NVTC affiliation.

Critical Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Membership Revenue & Sales Execution: Execute NVTC’s membership growth strategy by identifying and pursuing prospects across key technology sectors, conducting multi-channel outreach, and clearly communicating NVTC’s value to convert leads into new members.
  2. Pipeline & CRM Management: Maintain an accurate CRM sales pipeline, track prospect activity and revenue forecasts, deliver regular performance updates, and manage targeted prospect lists to ensure consistent outreach.
  3. Prospect Engagement: Build and strengthen relationships with potential members through personal outreach, including calls, LinkedIn engagement, in-person and virtual meetings, email campaigns, and networking.
  4. Member Onboarding & Experience: Oversee and deliver a consistent new‑member onboarding experience across all channels, including welcome communications and orientation touchpoints, while serving as the primary contact for members throughout their first year.
  5. Retention & Engagement Support: Support retention efforts by managing renewal outreach and engagement tracking, maintaining a proactive member touchpoint calendar, and monitoring participation to identify opportunities to strengthen satisfaction and engagement.
  6. Relationship Building: Build strong relationships with senior executives and strategic partners, collaborate with board members and volunteers to generate referrals, and represent NVTC at events, including occasional evening engagements.
  7. Lead Generation and Representation: Represent NVTC at industry events, conferences, and networking sessions (often outside of traditional working hours) to generate leads, promote NVTC programs, and close new membership sales.
  8. Performance Metrics: Track and analyze membership data to evaluate performance and inform continuous improvement in outreach and conversion strategies.
  9. Collaboration: Work closely with marketing, events, and operations teams to align messaging, campaigns, and member engagement strategies with NVTC’s goals.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in membership sales, business development, or client relationship management, ideally within a trade association, chamber of commerce, membership organization, or professional services environment.
  • Proven record of meeting or exceeding sales targets and managing a membership or client pipeline.
  • Demonstrated experience using CRM platforms to manage relationships and report results.
  • Experience representing an organization at external events and building relationships with senior-level executives.
  • Robust familiarity with the Northern Virginia and greater Washington, D.C. technology ecosystem strongly preferred.

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong sales and negotiation skills with the ability to close deals and meet revenue goals.
  • Excellent relationship management and interpersonal communication abilities.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Skilled in CRM database management and reporting (Salesforce, Monday, or similar tools).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation and follow-up.
  • Self-motivated, goal-driven, and comfortable working independently within a collaborative environment.
  • Knowledge of the technology industry, especially emerging technologies such as AI, is a plus.
  • Deep understanding of the regional technology landscape and NVTC’s role as a convener and advocate for the innovation community.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, communications, or a related field required.
  • Professional development or certification in sales, business development, or association management (e.g., CAE, CSP) preferred.

Pay:

$90,000 per year base salary plus commission
