On Wednesday, June 13, about 450 attendees gathered at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner for the final Titans NVTC breakfast of the 2011-2012 series. The event featured Booz Allen Hamilton Chairman and CEO Dr. Ralph W. Shrader discussing “Leading Through Dramatic Change.”

During the event, Shrader discussed Booz Allen’s history, including his attempt to bring Booz Allen’s two business sectors together, how different growth strategies and a cultural divide led the “One Firm Evolution” strategy not to succeed, the resulting separation of its U.S. government and global commercial businesses in 2008, its successful initial public offering in 2010, and the six straight quarters of top- and bottom-line growth since the IPO.
Calling the current landscape “the most challenging market conditions” he’s seen since he became the company’s chairman and CEO, Shrader stated that, during stormy conditions, it’s important to “stay centered and not to shift to and fro with the winds.”
Key to leading from the center, according to Shrader, is maintaining Booz Allen’s focus on client service, core mission, core values and culture. “Booz Allen serves clients, we don’t sell to customers,” said Shrader.
He explained that Booz Allen’s top leaders are more focused than ever on fostering the company’s collaborative, team-oriented culture, especially in the current distributed work environment with new technologies enabling telework and with many staff members based on-site with clients.
During his remarks, Shrader also commented on the current state of government procurement, stating that the recent focus on lowest price bids and minimally acceptable solutions can lead to decreased value and innovation with increased risk. He expressed his belief that government, industry and employees are all on the same team, working toward the same goals. “Collaboration is essential,” said Shrader.

The morning ended with a lively question-and-answer session during which Shrader addressed how Booz Allen nurtures client relationships, particularly in times of uncertainty, the company’s recent focus on the health care market and investments in cybersecurity and cloud technologies, and the importance of connectivity for clients and within Booz Allen.
