U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Chaffetz Addresses NVTC Board
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, met with the NVTC Board of Directors on Tuesday, July 12 at the Inova Center for Personalized Health in Falls Church.
Chairman Chaffetz discussed his role leading the committee, its relation to federal contracting and the commercial technology market, and how its Subcommittee on Information Technology addresses issues related to ensuring that the U.S. has the expertise and creativity to compete globally. Chaffetz addressed issues related to the $80 billion government IT sector and shared his support for the creation of the $3.1 billion IT Modernization Fund that agencies could utilize to upgrade their IT systems. He also addressed the government’s need for IT talent, protecting citizens’ privacy and the future impact of emerging technologies such as drones and connected, driverless cars. On the topic of internet taxation, Chaffetz provided background on the Remote Transactions Parity Act of 2015, legislation he sponsored to address state taxation of online purchases.

During a closing Q&A session, Chaffetz discussed acquisition reform, including the disconnect between government IT leaders and contracting officers and the challenges for entrepreneurial startups of the often lengthy contracting process. He also noted his support of changes that limit the use of lowest price, technically acceptable (LPTA) contract evaluation criteria, which NVTC recently played a key role in advocating for in the FY 2017 NDAA. Finally, he shared his thoughts on internet governance, the security clearance process and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) governance.
