Northern Virginia Technology Council Urges Congress to Enact Targeted COVID-19 Emergency Relief Package and Liability Protections
(McLean, Virginia) December 8, 2020 — The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), the trade association representing the Northern Virginia technology community, urges Congress to enact the targeted COVID-19 Emergency Relief Framework announced on December 1 by a bipartisan, bicameral group of legislators including Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) and Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT). Enacting this emergency relief proposal is critical to ensure Virginia’s businesses and workforce have every opportunity available to succeed during the challenging times as a result of the global pandemic.
We also urge Congress to enact liability provisions as part of the agreement to provide meaningful protections for Virginia businesses. Without targeted liability protections, the potential to hinder America’s economic recovery exists. NVTC believes an effective COVID-19 liability measure must meet the following key principles:
- It must be temporary and targeted;
- It must protect responsible businesses, and not reward bad actors; and
- It must reference Duty of Care best practices that offer clear guidance to businesses and safeguard customers and employees.
“NVTC is hopeful Congress will reach an agreement on this proposal during this critical inflection point of both the pandemic and our economic recovery,” said Jennifer Taylor, president and CEO of NVTC. “A failure to reach an agreement now would lead to unnecessary hardship, not only for our workforce and small businesses in the Commonwealth of Virginia, but our national economy as a whole.”
