Presented by the NVTC Data Center & Cloud Community of Interest
The U.S. Federal Government is on a journey to optimize its IT systems by leveraging commercial data centers and public cloud services. According to the most recent Data Center Optimization Report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office published in March 2021, federal agencies reported operating 5,916 data centers, down over 50% from the 12,062 reported in 2017. These agencies expect to close an additional 230 data centers and save $1.1 billion by 2023.
Question: When these data centers close, where do the applications and data go?
Answer: To commercial data centers and public clouds.
In this exclusive presentation Thomas Santucci, Director of the Data Center and Cloud Optimization Initiative PMO at the General Services Administration (GSA), will provide an update on the Federal Government’s IT optimization initiatives. Santucci will also lead a discussion with two federal IT leaders, Robert Sears and Sean McIntyre about the technology, economics, challenges, and opportunities of running government applications in commercial colocation facilities and public clouds.
