Masters of Leadership: The Honorable Karen Evans

The Northern Virginia Technology Council's Masters of Leadership series showcases innovative management strategies and bold leadership principles from some of the most prominent public figures and business leaders in our country.

Our next guest speaker is Karen Evans, the CIO for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Evans is responsible for strategically aligning the Department’s Information Technology (IT) personnel resources and assets, including security, infrastructure, and delivery, to support core DHS missions and activities. As a veteran federal IT executive, Evans served as former e-government administrator – a precursor to the Federal CIO position -- under President George W. Bush. In 2018 she was named to head the Department of Energy's Office of Cybersecurity, Energy, Security and Emergency Response at a time when policymakers expressed heightened concerns about the digital security of the nation’s electric grid and other critical energy infrastructure.

Evans will discuss the key principles that guide her leadership style as well as her thoughts on both short- and long-term goals and strategies for safely establishing a new normalcy in an effort to position the country for forward progress.  She will also share how she plans to tackle the initiatives ahead at DHS, including its data center consolidation, workforce upskilling and modernizing its network.
