NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative

Partnerships, Outreach and Advocacy

Partnerships with Academic Institutions

NVTC is working with its university and community college members to develop and expand veterans training programs that address the skills gap faced by many veterans as they leave military service. NVTC's academic partners are supporting the Veterans Employment Initiative by identifying the future employment needs of companies in the Commonwealth and providing education, certifications and associated support services to veteran students to better assure a smooth transition to the workplace.

Additionally, NVTC is working to facilitate internships and on-the-job training opportunities within the region's technology business community to help provide meaningful work experiences which not only provide "hands-on" learning opportunities, but also help sustain income requirements while a veteran is attending to their academic requirements. These types of work experiences can be extremely beneficial in introducing veterans to the civilian workplace and often can lead to fulltime employment opportunities after a veteran completes their educational requirements.

Outreach to Transitioning Military and Veterans

The objective of this program is to enable the targeted employees to gradually move from economic dependency into self-sufficiency as they earn a steady income and become contributing taxpayers, while the participating employers are able to reduce their federal income tax liability.

The Skillsource Group works to sustain, enhance and create workforce development initiatives on behalf of all current and future employers, jobseekers and workers throughout the region.

In addition, NVTC is fostering relationships with area military commands in order to reach the military community with the message that Northern Virginia is the best place in America for a veteran to start a civilian career, buy a home and raise a family.

The NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative will continue to seek out partnerships with Veterans Service Organizations that are tasked with serving veterans on a day-to-day basis and can promote the Initiative and its programs and services to their constituents.

Public Policy Advocacy

Through the NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative, NVTC members are advocating for state and federal policies that promote Veteran education, training and employment. These efforts included the successful passage in 2015 of legislation in Virginia providing for a Veterans Employment Performance Grant incentive for small and mid-size businesses that hire recently transitioned Veterans.
