NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative

Training for Companies and Services for Job Seekers

Training for Companies

The NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative has made educating member companies on best practices in recruiting, hiring, training and retaining veterans a top priority. The Initiative recently launched a series of free webinars designed to educate human resources professionals, recruiters, hiring managers, CEOs and COOs on best practices in veteran hiring. During these live monthly webinars, experts from NVTC member companies as well as federal and state government agencies provide tips and tools on specific topics related to veteran hiring. The webinars also will be archived for on-demand viewing.

Recruiting Days

The NVTC Veterans Employment Initiative has partnered with the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, the Virginia Employment Commission, and other local veteran support organizations and workforce investment boards to host recruiting events to match veteran-friendly companies with qualified veteran, National Guard and Reserve job-seekers. Unlike a traditional job fair during which candidates circulate to employer tables, these events allowed employers to pre-screen applicants and resumes before speaking with small groups of veterans in a round-robin format. Two recruiting days have been hosted so far.

VETWORKING

Transitioning from the military to a civilian career can be a real challenge, which is why mentoring and community support is crucial to the success of any veteran hiring effort. NVTC developed VETWORKING not only to provide veterans with professional and personal growth experiences necessary for success in career transition but also to improve retention once a job seeker has been employed with an NVTC member company.

The NVTC VETWORKING program is a personal and professional development program which combines elements of networking and mentoring. The program connects transitioning service members to other veterans in the region's technology sector. Through small group interactions and opportunities to participate in industry events, this program is facilitating development of veterans' professional skills, building their professional networks and empowering them through the support of fellow job seekers or newly-employed colleagues.

NVTC is seeking additional partners to help scale and build this high impact program. To find out how your organization can get involved with VETWORKING, contact Steve Jordon at sjordon@nvtc.org.
