[-] John Burton
 Co-founder and Managing General Partner, Updata Partners

John's IT experience spans 25 years as a Senior Executive of high-growth private and public companies. In 1984, he co-founded Business Software Technology, Inc. (BST) and served as Chief Operating Officer and Director. BST became the industry leader in software configuration management and grew at a compound annual growth rate of greater than 50%, achieving profitability in every financial quarter of operation. BST grew to sales of greater than $15 million, with net profit of over $2 million, before being acquired by Legent Corporation in 1989.

After the merger of Legent and BST, John became President, Chief Operating officer and then Chief Executive Officer of Legent. During his tenure, Legent grew in sales from $126 to over $500 million and was ranked as one of the ten largest software companies worldwide. Under his management, Legent executed over one dozen corporate acquisitions, nearing $1 billion in value.

Since 1995, John has advised, invested in and assisted several technology firms in expansion and re-engineering efforts. John currently serves on the boards of Updata Partners portfolio companies: CoreStreet, Everest Software, Harmony Information Systems and ObjectVideo. He has been recognized by the technology community in the mid-Atlantic with the 2001 Financier of the Year Award from The Northern Virginia, Maryland and DC Technology Councils and the 2002 Earle C. Williams Award for significant contributions to the Northern Virginia technology community.


[-] Gary Pan
 President, Panacea Consulting, Inc.

Gary Pan is the President and CEO of Panacea Consulting, Inc. (Panacea) Since Panacea's inception in 1990, Mr. Pan has been instrumental in leading the company's day-to-day strategic operations and fostering the culture, management team, and marketing strategies that have made Panacea the award winning technology firm recognized by the Washington Technology Magazine, Inc. 500, the Washington Techway, the Virginia Business Magazine, and the Government Computer News (GCN) in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2005. Mr. Pan led a team that initiated several nationwide network rollout projects for U.S. Department of Labor's Employment Standards Administration (ESA), establishing the company's reputation and positioning in federal industry. Mr. Pan's commitment to going beyond problem-solving to problem-finding helps clients look beyond the surface of issues with a systematic perspective. Under Pan's leadership, Panacea secures more contracts that further expand Panacea's capabilities and strengthens the company's presence in key markets ranging from enterprise architecture infrastructure and system development to program management, work flow management, and records management. Mr. Pan is an outstanding and active member of the community. Mr. Pan serves on the boards of the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) and is a frequent speaker on industrial trends and events. As a board member of the Junior Achievement (JA) program, he actively volunteers in educating high school students where they learn enterprise and economic knowledge through interacting with volunteer entrepreneurs. Mr. Pan is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Mr. Pan earned his MBA with a concentration in International Management from Virginia Polytechnic University of Virginia and his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Legal Studies from Lehigh University of Pennsylvania. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D in Organizational Management of Phoenix University. He recently acquired Project Manager Professional (PMP) certification.



BOARD MEMBERS

[-] Bill Buckley
 President & COO, CGS Solutions

Bill Buckley is founder and president of CGS Solutions, a marketing communications firm that focuses on creating a consistent look and feel for its clients' print and electronic communications to help build brand awareness, resonance and relevance for their products, services or organizations.

Bill founded CGS in 1991and has grown the company from a one-person consulting firm to a full-service agency offering brand consulting, public relations and visual communications, including graphic design, Web site design and development, multimedia presentations, and email marketing. His clients include trade and professional associations, non-profits, and mid-sized to large businesses.

Prior to starting CGS, Bill spent seven years as Vice President of Marketing for his family's printing business. He is an active member of the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives and the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).

In addition to his role as president of CGS Solutions, Bill sits on the board of a local technology firm, Mona Building Technologies. Bill also sits on the board of the Soul Source Foundation, a privately held charitable foundation. Over the past several years, Bill has worked with the local high schools, providing internships for students interested in the graphic design and technology fields.


[-] Chris Cantarella
 Principal of the Private Equity Practice, Heidrick and Struggles

Chris Cantarella is the Principal of the Private Equity Practice of Heidrick and Struggles. His search practice spans a variety of industries including aerospace and defense, private equity/venture capital, technology and industrial. For private equity firms, he leads searches for senior executives in portfolio companies as well as for the managing directors/partners of the firms themselves. Most recently, Chris was a key leader in Ernst & Young's Private Equity Practice. As a Director for their Private Equity Practice Mid Atlantic, he worked with numerous funds and their portfolios and became E&Y's primary business development leader in the U.S., focusing on the private equity market. Previously, Chris ran the business development & new venture advisory for the Venture Capital Advisory Group (VCAG) Mid Atlantic. Prior to joining Ernst & Young, Mr. Cantarella was a member of a small Northern Virginia/Maryland angel investment firm known as FastForward Capital, where he advised multiple start-ups on business development, finance, and alliance issues. Chris was also the CEO of WarmCorners Inc., a software company once named "one of the twenty most promising start-ups in the US" by Red Herring. Mr. Cantarella was also a senior consultant for PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP where he managed multiple engagements in business strategy/re-engineering and Activity Based Costing. Chris is a regular speaker on the subject of venture capital and serves as a committee/board member to numerous organizations such as the Fairfax County Medical Care for Children Partnership, the Mid Atlantic Venture Association, the Mid Atlantic Venture Conference, The Virginia Biotechnology Association, and The Potomac Officers Club. He is also a regular guest lecturer at the University of Maryland and The George Washington University. Prior to entering the business world, Mr. Cantarella had a successful career as a US Naval Officer where he flew F-14 fighter aircraft. Chris received a BS in engineering from the US Naval Academy and an MBA with honors from The George Washington University.


[-] Michael Devine

Mike is a financial professional with 25 years of experience working with emerging technology companies. Prior to joining Secure Software, Mike was a partner at Arthur Andersen and Deloitte and Touche. Mike began his career in the Boston office of Arthur Andersen in 1979 and became a partner in 1990. Mike later joined Deloitte and Touche as a partner in their Technology, Media and Telecommunications Group. During his career in public accounting, Mike has assisted many companies through the progression from start-up, financing, product development and introduction, rapid growth, initial public offering and beyond. His clients included Best Software, Transaction Network Services, UUNET Technologies, Vastera and Visual Networks.

Mike is a former member of the Board Of Directors of The Northern Virginia Technology Council, the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, and The Fairfax county Public Schools Education foundation. He is currently a member of the Advisory Board of The Entrepreneurship Center at NVTC. Mike is a CPA licensed in Virginia and Massachusetts. Mike received his BA fron Rider College and his MBA from Penn State.


[-] John Hurley
 Managing Director, DLA Piper's Venture Pipeline Group

John Hurley is the Managing Director of DLA Piper's Venture Pipeline Group and works directly with the Corporate Securities group to leverage the firm's experience in the emerging growth and venture capital sectors. Mr. Hurley has advised hundreds of emerging growth technology companies on various aspects of their business plans, including management and recruiting issues, market development, strategic partnerships and financing strategies. Most recently, Mr. Hurley was the founder of The LMR Company, a management consulting firm focused on creating and implementing business development, fund raising and branding solutions for venture capital, technology and service sector clients. Prior to founding his company, Hurley was an advisor at The Morino Institute. He was the founder and Publisher of TECHcapital magazine, and Senior Vice President for Post-Newsweek Business Information, Inc., a subsidiary of The Washington Post Company. Hurley served as PNBI's Vice President of entrepreneurial ventures (1994-1997) and CFO/Director of Operations (1991-1994). A few of his major accomplishments include; being a member of the acquisition team for the sale to The Washington Post Company, launching TECHcapital magazine, co-creating the National Technology Fast 500 program (sold to Deloitte & Touché LLP, 1997) and establishing PNBI's ancillary sales unit.

Hurley has a B.S. degree in Business Management from the University of Maryland.

 Managing Partner, New Vantage Group, LLC

John May is the managing partner of New Vantage Group, a Vienna, VA firm that innovatively mobilizes private equity into early-stage companies and provides advisory services to both funds and private investors. Mr. May's experience in private equity capital over the last 15 years ranges from venture capital fund management to angel investing.

Mr. May has been at the forefront of the angel investor movement. In 1991, he co-founded the Investors' Circle, a national non-profit group of 125 family and institutional investors working to grow the social venture capital industry. Additionally in 1996, he co-founded and became executive director of the Private Investors Network, an angel network sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, which he led until 2002. John is vice-chairman of the newly formed Angel Capital Association of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and is a lead instructor for their "Power of Angel Investing" seminars. Mr. May co-founded The Dinner Club, an investment group of 60 regional angels who collectively invest in regional early stage ventures. A larger private investor pool, the eMedia Club with 75 members, followed it, and in 2000, the Washington Dinner Club with 75 members was started. In 2003, Active Angel Investors, a "pledge" fund was created. New Vantage Group administers all of these groups.

Mr. May is a venture capitalist and has been an advisor to six venture funds. He is a Managing General Partner of Calvert Social Venture Partners, LP, a Washington, DC-based venture capital firm specializing in providing early-stage capital and assistance to emerging growth companies. Mr. May is also an advisor to and a member of the Investment Committee of the Women's Growth Capital Fund, LP, a Washington, DC-based $30 million fund, and is the fund advisor to Next Generation Partners, L.P., a $10 million Fairfax, VA, information technology venture fund. New Vantage Group is the mid-Atlantic advisor to Solstice Capital, which manages $85 million in two venture funds headquartered in Boston, MA. He is an investment committee member of Verde Ventures, a social venture fund of Conservation International.

He is the author, along with Cal Simmons, of Every Business Needs an Angel (Crown Business: 2001). He has written numerous articles, been quoted in major regional and national newspapers and magazines, and has been interviewed on TV, radio, and web chats. He has been a member on the Selection Committee for the annual Maryland Incubator Companies of the Year Awards, the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business Plan Competition, the University of Maryland Business Plan Competition and the National Social Venture Competition judging panel. He also co-chairs the Northern Virginia Technology Council's Technology Entrepreneur Center. In the fall of 2002, the Batten Institute at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration appointed Mr. May as a "Batten Fellow". In 2003, Mr. May co-edited a book and multimedia CD entitled State of the Art: An Executive Briefing on Cutting-Edge Practices in American Angel Investing (Darden Business Publishing: 2003). In January 2004, John became the part-time director, Northern Virginia Initiative of the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration and a UVA faculty member.

In addition, Mr. May sits on several boards of directors of non-profits such as Mindshare, the Mid-Atlantic Venture Association, the Baltimore-Washington Venture Group, the National Center for Bicycling and Walking, VA Center for Innovative Technology GAP fund and the Institute for Educational Leadership. He has been married to Ann Church for 27 years, has two college-age children and resides in McLean, Virginia.


[-] Allan Mink
 Former Chairman, MIT Enterprise Forum

Allan 'Al' Mink is Chairman and President of the regional MIT Enterprise Forum. The Forum promotes entrepreneurship, particularly innovative and technology-based start-ups in the region through networking and education. The Forum leverages the unique aspects of this powerful region in its numerous programs and activities. Al is also Principal, Systems Engineering and Strategy, for SRA International. Formerly, Al was CEO of Systems Value; Vice President, Defense and Intelligence for Unisys Corporation; and COO/CTO of the Systems and Software Consortium. As an adjunct professor, Al teaches IT Strategy, a core course for MBA students at American University.

Al serves on the board of Advisors of several local firms. He's Past President and Board Member of the Armed Forces Electronics Association (Northern Virginia) and is currently Chairman of AFCEA International's Solutions Committee. Al was selected by National Defense Industrial Association's and the Office of the Secretary of Defense as one of industry's dozen "Software Industry Experts" working DoD-Industry software issues. Al also serves on the Board of Directors for the local MIT Alumni Association and in the past served on MIT's Education Council. Al retired from the United States Air Force as a Colonel and decorated combat pilot. He received his bachelors degree from MIT, his masters degree from CMU, and his Certified Systems Engineering Professional accreditation from the International Council on Systems Engineering.


[-] Kimberly Pratt
 Director of Strategic Communications, LeapFrog Solutions Inc.

Kim Pratt is Director of Strategic Communications at LeapFrog Solutions, Inc. (LFS), a full-service marketing communications firm located in Oakton, VA. LFS serves a broad base of clients in the fields of technology, healthcare, finance, professional services and government.

Ms. Pratt has more than 15 years of marketing communications and management experience in industries such as telecommunications, associations, software and International business. At LFS she serves as the lead strategist and manages clients in both the public- and private-sector. The LFS client base includes industry leaders such as the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority, Athena Technologies, Department of the Interior, GovWorks Directorate, Fairfax County Government, USDA Forest Service, and the Northern Virginia Workforce Investment Board. Pratt also spearheads the marketing strategies for the agency and develops articles, strategic plans and management strategies.

Prior to joining LFS Pratt handled marketing and operations for leading Washington DC organizations including the Consumer Electronics Association, the Industrial Designers Society of America and PCCW Global.

Pratt holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the State University of New York at Albany.


[-] Guillermo Söhnlein
 Managing Director, Space Angels Network

Guillermo Söhnlein has spent almost ten years in leadership roles with various technology startups in the Washington DC area as well as Silicon Valley. His recent ventures include an online service helping commuters to share rides, a mobile games distribution platform, and a Web-based communication suite for small and mid-sized businesses. Previously, he was co-founder of a speech recognition application development firm that was acquired in 2001. Guillermo currently serves on various Advisory Boards, teaches entrepreneurship, and is the Founder and Chairman of the International Association of Space Entrepreneurs, a membership trade association focused on promoting global entrepreneurship in the space industry. Guillermo served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps as a Judge Advocate. He earned an A.B. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley and a J.D. from the University of California Hastings College of the Law.


[-] John Sullivan
 Partner, Kennedy & Baris, L.L.P.

John Sullivan is a partner in the corporate law firm, Kennedy & Baris, L.L.P. He represents underwriters, institutional investors, venture capitalists, financial institutions, international and national corporations and their officers, directors and shareholders in all aspects of corporate activity.

For new corporations, Mr. Sullivan routinely provides advice on articles of incorporation, bylaws, capital structure, shareholder agreements and financial goals. For existing entities, he provides advice and implements capital formation alternatives, including public offerings, private placements, formation of venture capital funds and SBICs, mergers and acquisitions, and debt financings. A significant number of his clients are in government contracts or service businesses, such as lobbying, consulting and legal/accounting.

Mr. Sullivan regularly counsels clients on a variety of state and federal securities matters, including listings (and delisting appeals) on the NASDAQ and other national exchanges. He also represents corporate clients in contested and negotiated acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, and joint venture transactions. He completed six IPOs from 1997-2000 and has closed several of the D.C. area's largest mergers and tender offers.

Mr. Sullivan is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and the Virginia State Bar. He is a frequent speaker, author and lecturer on business and technology legal issues. He is the founder of the Northern Virginia Technology Council's, "ESolutions," a professional advisory service for high-tech companies. He is the founder and chair of The Grubstake Breakfast Club of George Mason University, an angel breakfast which helps small technology businesses raise capital.

Mr. Sullivan received his bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, from Amherst College. He received his juris doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.


[-] Bob Templin
 President, Northern Virginia Community College

Bob Templin serves as the fourth president of Northern Virginia Community College, Virginia's largest institution of higher education and the nation's second largest community college. Located just outside of Washington, DC, NVCC enrolls more than 65,000 students annually at its five campuses. Templin came to NVCC from the Morino Institute where he served as a senior fellow since 1999 and helped in the development and launch of Venture Philanthropy Partners, a $35 million philanthropic fund targeting youth-serving organizations in low-income communities in the Washington metro area. Between 1994 and 1999, Templin served as the president of Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology, a state-funded organization that enhances Virginia's economic competitiveness through technology-based economic development. During Templin's tenure, the Center was credited with helping to create or retain over 12,000 high-tech jobs, attract or create more than 225 technology-based companies, and increase company sales or new capital investment by more than $500 million. From 1986-1994 Templin served as president of Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, Virginia.

Over the past 15 years, Dr. Templin's work in workforce training, education, and economic development has been featured in such publications as Virginia Business Magazine, The Washington Post, USA Today, and Fortune magazine. He is the author of Virginia's comprehensive workforce development plan and was instrumental in the creation of the "Blueprint for Technology-Based Economic Growth in Virginia", a strategic plan that outlines the steps that Virginia should take to guide the state's emergence as a leading technology state. In 1997, Dr. Templin was selected by Virginia Business Magazine as "Business Newsmaker of the Year," and he received Leadership in Technology Awards from the Northern Virginia Technology Council and the Greater Richmond Technology Council. In 1998, Digital South magazine named him one of the top 50 influential technology leaders in the South. The Virginia Technology Alliance, representing the state's eight regional technology councils, awarded Dr. Templin its first-ever Distinguished Leadership Award.



HONORARY MEMBERS

[-] Kathy Clark
 Chairman Emeritus, NVTC

Katherine K. (Kathy) Clark was chief executive officer of Landmark Systems Corporation, a company she co-founded with Patrick H. McGettigan. Landmark began as an entrepreneurial venture between Ms. Clark and Mr. McGettigan in 1983 and was successfully sold to ASG in 2001. At the time, the two worked in the Information Systems department of Blue Cross and Blue Shield. They teamed up to develop a performance management application, which was well received throughout the company. Fueled by a drive for success, they began thinking about the application's commercial potential.

Ms. Clark and Mr. McGettigan negotiated a deal with Blue Cross and Blue Shield to obtain the rights to the application and it eventually became Landmark's first product, The Monitor for Customer Information Control System (CICS).

The Monitor for CICS soon became the industry standard, making Landmark a huge success and allowing it to enjoy steady growth. Today, The Monitor for CICS is part of an entire family of performance management products for mainframe and client/server environments.

Throughout her career at Landmark, Ms. Clark has been an all-purpose leader. She has been in charge of business development, customer service, finance and human resources before assuming her current position of CEO.

Highlights of Ms. Clark's career include:
  • Developing an international distribution channel that accounts for a large percentage of Landmark's revenue.
  • Establishing the industry's first unconditional customer satisfaction guarantee.
  • Expanding Landmark's product line into a complete suite of performance solutions for the enterprise.
  • Taking the company public in 1997.
Ms. Clark holds a master's degree in business administration from George Mason University and actively supports the George Mason University Century Club. In 1996, Ms. Clark was recognized as George Mason Alumnus of the Year and she received the KPMG Peat Marwick High Tech Entrepreneur Award. In 1998, she was honored by NVTC with the Earle C. Williams Leadership in Technology Award. She also won the Ernst & Young Software Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1998. Ms. Clark serves on the board of directors for WLR Foods, Inc., and is a popular speaker at technical forums and throughout the national and international business community.

Ms. Clark dedicates many hours to being the best - both professionally and personally. She enjoys biking, running, golfing and sailing and was also a driving force behind Landmark's corporate outreach program.
