Schwartz, Wang, and the CEOs of NVTC member companies Boeing, Chrysalis Ventures, Google, and Siemens joined approximately 130 other business executives, labor leaders, economists, mayors and representatives from nonprofits at the Summit, which addressed policies to promote job creation. In his opening remarks President Obama stated that, despite the government's critical role in creating the conditions for economic growth, true economic recovery would only come from the private sector. He urged forum participants to provide detailed and specific recommendations to spur job growth as quickly as possible. In his remarks, Vice President Biden highlighted forthcoming announcements about investments of roughly $13 billion in broadband, high-speed rail, competitive education and infrastructure. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis and Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke also addressed the attendees during the event. Video and transcripts from the Summit are available on the White House Web site. Following the opening session, senior administration officials hosted smaller discussions on creating jobs through infrastructure, exports, green jobs, small business, investment, and helping workers on Main Street. Schwartz and Wang both participated in the small business discussion, which was moderated by Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and SBA Administrator Karen Mills, and shared the following about their experience at the Summit. "I appreciated the once in a lifetime opportunity to represent NVTC at this Summit," stated Sheryl Schwartz. "I urged the Obama Administration, as it looks to implement programs to stimulate job growth, to make the needs of small businesses a priority through increased access to capital, tax incentives and regulatory reforms that encourage innovation." "Participating in the White House Jobs Summit was an engaging experience," said Rose Wang. "I'm proud to have contributed to the constructive dialogue about how small businesses in the technology sector can create jobs and help drive economic growth." In a follow-up to the Summit, President Obama outlined several proposals aimed at accelerating job growth and hiring among small businesses during a speech at the Brookings Institution today, December 8. The president's plan includes the elimination of capital gains taxes on small business investment, an extension of write-offs to encourage small business expansion, and tax incentives for small businesses that hire and keep new workers. The worldwide event showcased various charities in each region where Deltek has a corporate office. In the Herndon region, EFF was one of four local charities Deltek is supporting. Other charities are Loudon Interfaith Pantry, Teardrops to Rainbows, and Hart of Northern Virginia. For the Equal Footing Foundation, Deltek's Herndon employees stuffed 100 backpacks with school supplies, dictionaries and other items needed to help EFF's Computer Clubhouse students excel in school. In addition to the supplies, Deltek employees wrote personal notes to Clubhouse students to help inspire them to succeed in life, studies and school. EFF and the Clubhouse managers will distribute the backpacks the last week of school in December. Recognizing the complexity of the task, Congress assigned the National Institute of Standards and Technology the responsibility to coordinate the development of standards for the U.S. Smart Grid. In this talk George W. Arnold, National Coordinator for Smart Grid Interoperability, will explain how this work is being done, explore the conceptual reference model of the Smart Grid and related standards that are emerging, and discuss some of the challenges that need to be addressed.
