NVTC Members Attend Clean Energy Economy Forum at White House

Left to right: Amr ElSawy and David Evans of Noblis;
Sudhakar Kesavan of ICF International; and Tony Maull of Federated Power
at the White House Clean Energy Economy Forum, October 28.

NVTC Board member Sudhakar Kesavan, Chairman & CEO of ICF International, and NVTC members Amr ElSawy, President and CEO of Noblis, an NVTC Board member company, David Evans, director of Noblis' Center for Sustainability: Earth, Energy & Climate, and Tony Maull, President of Federated Power and Co-Chair of the NVTC Green Technology & Energy Task Force, attended a Clean Energy Economy Forum hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy at the White House on Wednesday, October 28.

The forum was part of the Administration's focus on clean energy as the "second industrial revolution." The stimulus package passed earlier this year has close to $80 billion earmarked for energy projects and President Obama last week also announced $3.4 billion in funding that would be dedicated to building the Smart Grid.

According to Carol Browner, Director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change Policy, the Administration is focused on jobs, breaking dependence on foreign oil, sending a clear and consistent signal to industry about the U.S. direction and priorities, and putting limits on greenhouse gas emissions. As Congress considers and debates legislation on these issues, Browner said, the Administration is moving ahead with mechanisms that can be implemented within the Executive branch such as efficiency standards for cars and appliances.

Secretary of Energy Steven Chu touched on the importance of developing and implementing a sustainable strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy efficiency. He sees the Administration's ability to send a consistent message to industry as being critical to spurring innovation and sustaining a global competitive advantage.

Along with Director Browner and Secretary Chu, panelists from Unisolar, Pepco, CREE and A123 Systems spoke of the efforts their companies are putting into clean energy and efficient energy projects such as LED lighting, Smart meters for the home, Smart batteries, micro-grids, solar roofing materials, and large scale storage facilities for renewable storage.

NVTC President and CEO Bobbie Kilberg talks with
President Obama after the White House briefing on
small business and health insurance reform.

NVTC President and CEO Bobbie Kilberg and NVTC members Kristina Bouweiri, CEO of Reston Limousine, and Bill Sheridan, President of Plus Computing Corporation, were at the White House on October 29 to attend a presidential briefing on small business and health insurance reform. Bobbie was seated by the White House in the front row for President Obama's remarks. Members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Federal of Independent Business, and small business owners and organizations from across the country were also in attendance.

President Obama laid out his current health insurance reform proposals and the impact they would have on small businesses.

At the end of the briefing, Bobbie had the opportunity to discuss with the president the need for small businesses - like many of our NVTC members - to have access to insurance pooling so that they can provide adequate, affordable health insurance options for their employees.

This past weekend on Halloween morning, nearly 500 runners descended on West Potomac Park for the 2nd Annual Run! Geek! Run! 8K to benefit the Equal Footing Foundation. A DJ played upbeat music to get the runners pumped up for their early morning five-mile run from West Potomac Park to Hains Point and back. NVTC President and CEO Bobbie Kilberg, the official race starter, thanked everyone for coming out and gave final instructions before sending them on their way.

Mary Davison of Bristow, Va., won the women's race in a time of 31:06, while Bill Bray of Fairfax, Va. won the men's race with a time of 28:06. In the team competition, Quantico Orienteering Club took the title with Near Infinity coming in second place followed by Team Leros.

UPCOMING EVENTS Supported by The Entrepreneur Center @NVTC:

Technology Transfer and Innovation Forum - November 18

Come hear about emerging trends in the U.S. for "ad-hoc business creation" and "co-working" for entrepreneurs. Through physical entrepreneur flex space and social networking, business creation and partnerships will be fleshed out through new "entrepreneur sourcing" methodologies. Traditional business incubators and business office space are good for some entrepreneurs but others require and are demanding new ways to develop partnerships, identify business opportunities, and to create networking potential in non-traditional ways. Keith Segerson, from George Mason University's Mason Enterprise Center will provide key insights on these new business development environments. The event will take place from 12:00 - 1:30 pm at the Southeastern Universities Research Association, 1201 New York Ave. NW, Suite 430, Washington, D.C. 20005.
