Microsoft to Locate Major Data Center in Southern Virginia

Last week, Microsoft announced that it will invest up to $499 million to locate its latest generation data center (Gen4) in Mecklenburg County, the largest investment in Southern Virginia history. Using modular technology and advanced cooling mechanics, the center will be Microsoft's most advanced data center.

Virginia successfully competed against North Carolina and Texas to secure this sought-after facility, which will create 50 new jobs. Governor Bob McDonnell called securing the global project a "significant economic win for Virginia." According to the governor, the project "will further bolster the Commonwealth's standing as a leader in the Information Technology sector, while creating new jobs for our citizens and spurring economic development throughout the region."

"Microsoft's longstanding partnership with NVTC helps us stay connected to the incredible innovation that's going on all across Virginia," said NVTC Board member Curt Kolcun, Vice President, U.S. Public Sector at Microsoft. "Back in 2007, I participated in NVTC's 'Tech Tour' of Southern Virginia which showcased the significant technology investments the region was making to support 21st century job growth. This Virginia commitment to IT leadership is why we've chosen Mecklenburg County as the location for Microsoft's next generation data center."

A $2.1 million grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund will assist Mecklenburg County with the project. Additional funds will be provided by the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission and the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will provide training assistance through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program.
