The Entrepreneur Center's FastTrac® TechVenture™ Program Honors its Spring 2011 Graduates

On June 7, The Entrepreneur Center @NVTC graduated 10 companies from its FastTrac® TechVenture™ entrepreneur training program. These graduates join the 35 previous that have graduated from the Entrepreneur Center's program since fall 2009. The program, which combines instruction from experienced business professionals, one-on-one business mentoring and peer learning, helps participants to evaluate feasibility, identify target markets and create a business plan to communicate the opportunity to investors and customers. Created by Kansas City-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the largest organization in the nation solely focused on entrepreneurial success, FastTrac has served more than 300,000 entrepreneurs since 1993.

Bobbie Kilberg, Dr. Alan Merten, Dan Bannister and NVTC Member Companies to be Honored at Fairfax Chamber's 2011 Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Awards
The Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce recently announced the finalists of the Corporate Citizenship Awards. Congratulations to NVTC President and CEO Bobbie Kilberg, who was named the inaugural recipient of the NOVAForward Award, which recognizes exceptional work to move Northern Virginia businesses and the community forward. NVTC Board member Dr. Alan G. Merten, president of George Mason University, and Former NVTC Chairman Dan Bannister (posthumous) will be honored with the James M. Rees Award, which recognizes dedication to the community and the Chamber.
Congratulations also go to NVTC Board member companies CGI and Deloitte, and NVTC member companies Capital One Bank, Holland & Knight LLP and XO Communications, nominated for the Outstanding Corporate Citizen of the Year – Large Business award.
Additionally, NVTC Board member company LeapFrog Solutions is a finalist for the Woman-Owned Business of the Year award, and NVTC members Inova Health System and United Way of the National Capital Region are finalists for the Non-Profit of the Year award.
The Fairfax Chamber will honor community leaders and recognize the finalists and winners at the Annual Chairman's Luncheon & Outstanding Corporate Citizenship Awards on Wednesday, June 29.

CACI’s Jack London Shares Business Insights with Members at Inaugural Lunch & Learn Event
On June 9, NVTC hosted a Lunch & Learn event with NVTC Board Member Dr. Jack London, executive chairman and chairman of the board of CACI International Inc. At this inaugural event, a select group of 19 C-level executives from NVTC member companies had the unique opportunity to network with their colleagues and learn how London translated his years of military service into leading CACI's growth from a small professional services consulting firm to a pacesetter in IT and communications solutions in the areas of defense, intelligence, homeland security, and IT modernization and government transformation.
In this intimate roundtable discussion, Dr. London shared his tips for building the right company culture, recruiting and retaining top staff, identifying markets, managing company growth and dealing with crisis management.

Power of Angel Investing Series: Valuation of Early-Stage Companies Workshop July 13
Join The Entrepreneur Center @NVTC for the third and final workshop of The Power of Angel Investing, a new series developed by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and distributed by the Angel Capital Education Foundation, focused on educating current angel investors and potential new investors in the region. NVTC’s version of these nationally renowned workshops, facilitated by John May of New Vantage Group, is customized for the Greater Washington Region with local expert panelists.
The Power of Angel Investing series is designed to provide tools and knowledge that encourage angels to become more active; share best practices, models, checklists and resources; increase efficiencies and success in angel investing; and provide opportunities to meet angel colleagues and local experts.
July 13 - Valuation of Early-Stage Companies Workshop:
This workshop is designed to educate and empower angel investors, entrepreneurs and the startup community in an engaging and hands-on format about several methodologies used to value pre-revenue companies. This workshop teaches three methodologies: The Venture Capital Method, the Scorecard Method and the Risk Factor Summation Method. In addition, this workshop explores the importance of approaches and roles of returns and portfolio strategies to angel groups and will discuss how this knowledge is essential to your next deal. The workshop will then wrap up with an interactive case study that has become popular with ACEF programs.

University of Virginia Partners with Local Companies and Institutions to Launch Virginia Nanoelectronics Center
At a ceremony on May 25, the University of Virginia, in partnership with the College of William & Mary and Old Dominion University, announced the creation of the Virginia Nanoelectronics Center (ViNC) to advance research aimed at developing next-generation electronics. The university partners have also worked closely with NVTC Board member company Micron Technology, who has had a long-term research partnership with U.Va., to launch the center.
"This is a fantastic example of the kind of R&D partnership that will help propel Virginia to the forefront of the innovation economy," said Virginia Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey.
ViNC will bring together world-class researchers to explore and develop advanced materials, novel devices and circuits at nanoscale dimensions. Research conducted at the center will serve as the foundation for producing faster, smaller and more affordable computer applications. For more information, click here.

Nominate by July 1 for the 11th Annual Heroines in Technology Awards
Do you know a woman who works in the technology industry and exemplifies volunteer service in the community? If so, nominate her by July 1 for a Heroine in Technology award. The Heroines in Technology awards program, presented by the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA NOVA) and March of Dimes, recognizes women in the technology industry who have used their experience, knowledge and skills to benefit the community. In addition, woman-owned or woman-run companies will be recognized for extraordinary commitment to local service or philanthropy.
The 11th annual Heroines in Technology event will be held Friday, October 21, at the Hyatt Regency Reston. At the gala, AFCEA NOVA and the March of Dimes will recognize the finalists and announce the Heroine award winners in the following categories: Rising, Individual, Corporate, AFCEA International Government and Lifetime Achievement.
