On May 12, The Equal Footing Foundation (EFF) launched its newest Computer Clubhouse in Fauquier County. Located in Warrenton at the Boys and Girls Club of Fauquier County Keith Street location, the new clubhouse provides Fauquier County students, ages 8-18, with computer access, mentoring and opportunities to finish homework, work on projects and explore their interests in science, technology, engineering and math. During the open house, visitors and local dignitaries toured the clubhouse facility, learning from students how they benefit from the clubhouse program.

Bobbie gave special thanks to Colleen M. Hahn, President and Executive Director, Equal Footing Foundation, for her extraordinary work in making this clubhouse a reality. EFF Chairman Dan Gonzalez, Managing Partner of Appian Realty Advisors, LLC, gave an overview of the Foundation, and thanked several people who helped get the Fauquier County Clubhouse off the ground, including EFF Board member Mimi Abel-Smith of the Chichester DuPont Foundation, Peter Schwartz and Terry Nyhouse of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors, and the Board of the Boys and Girls Club of Fauquier County. NVTC Members Participate in White House STEM Briefing

On Tuesday, May 11, more than 10 NVTC members participated in a White House briefing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education along with approximately 150 other business, nonprofit and government leaders. The discussion highlighted President Obama's "Educate to Innovate" campaign to improve the participation and performance of America's students in STEM, strengthening the country's economic future and competitiveness.

During the event, speakers from the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy, the White House Domestic Policy Council and the Department of Education presented highlights of current government initiatives, including National Lab Day and the first White House science fair, and emphasized the need to build the capacity and scale of current STEM programs on a national and state level. In particular, the administration officials described the importance of building upon the expertise and core competencies of the private sector and nonprofits.

During discussion among the speakers and participants, NVTC Board member Gary Pan, President and CEO of Panacea Consulting, described the successful Computer Clubhouse program run by the Equal Footing Foundation as an example of how to get underserved youth engaged in and excited about STEM. Other participants urged the Obama Administration and the private sector to identify and promote science role models who can convey the message that science and math are cool and can lead to creative, rewarding, and lucrative careers.

Moving forward, businesses and STEM stakeholders were encouraged to share best practices to promote STEM careers and STEM education through organizations such as Change the Equation, a joint effort by the Carnegie and Gates Foundations.
