New Federal CIO Vivek Kundra Lays Out Agenda at Rare Saturday Event

Vivek Kundra, President Obama's brand-new Federal Chief Information Officer, spoke to an audience of more than 260 at the Ritz-Carlton last Saturday morning. Kundra outlined an ambitious agenda that focused on making the federal government more "context-driven," freeing it from the bureaucracy of the past and delivering services directly to the people.

Kundra addresses the crowd.

The event, hosted by NVTC along with TechAmerica, the Greater Washington Board of Trade, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and ITS America, kicked off NVTC's new Public Policy series. In his remarks, Kundra repeatedly noted the government's IT system is lagging behind the private sector.

"We need to ensure we're embracing technology to drive innovation, to create a more open and transparent government to ensure that we're lowering the cost of government," Kundra said. "The world has fundamentally shifted — no longer do you need to make those billion-dollar investments to engage the American people to deliver services. You can do so in much lighter ways. I submit to you the concept of the 'context-driven' government."

Kundra with NVTC President & CEO Bobbie Kilberg.

Kundra explained that when people need services from the government now that they get bogged down in bureaucracy. He said he wanted to make dealing with the government as easy as using Facebook or eBay. He added that the government often leads the way in innovation and will continue to do so, citing the Defense Department's democratization of GPS and the democratization of the human genome project to further medical and drug discoveries.

Several participants said that the breakfast had a more relaxed feel than many events staged during a weekday. Traffic was light in Tysons Corner, parking was free and many attendees wore jeans or shorts before embarking on their day's activities.

NVTC Members Help the Environment at PC Recycler Computer Recycling Event

The temperature may have reached the low 90s on a bright sunny day, but that didn't stop people from dropping off their old PCs, monitors, TV sets, cell phones and even sewing machines at Wolf Trap last Saturday. The computer recycling event was facilitated by PC Recycler and was hosted by NVTC, Wolf Trap and Panacea Consulting.

One of the goals of NVTC's Green Technology and Energy Task Force has been to promote environmentally-friendly initiatives. At this event, those who brought computers were shown how their hard drives would be destroyed safely and cleanly. PC Recycler has stated that data destruction is important to ensure hard drives are not re-used again and that sensitive information does not fall into the wrong hands. The Chantilly, VA-based company also said that all of the items destroyed are properly recycled, with nothing ending up in a landfill.

A representative from PC Recycler, left, along with Garrett Pan (son of NVTC Board Member Gary Pan) and
Delegate Ken Plum (D-Reston) examine recycled computers at Wolf Trap.
