LivingSocial CEO and Co-Founder Tim O'Shaughnessy Talks Redefining Commerce at Last Wednesday's NVTC Titans Breakfast

LivingSocial CEO and Co-Founder Tim O'Shaughnessy addressing
more than 550 attendees last Wednesday.
On Wednesday, April 6, a packed house of more than 550 attendees gathered at The Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner for the last NVTC Titans breakfast of the fiscal year. During the event, LivingSocial CEO and Co-Founder Tim O'Shaughnessy described LivingSocial's exponential growth and how the company is redefining local commerce.

According to O'Shaughnessy, LivingSocial has expanded into 200 markets and 12 countries over the past year and he expects to be in 30 to 40 countries by the end of 2011. He credits the company’s growth to its successful local commerce model that focuses on personal attention to local merchants and building a healthy ecosystem in which LivingSocial, local merchants and members all benefit. Moving forward, he will continue to build LivingSocial’s demand generation products, like its Daily Deals, Escapes, Adventures and Family Edition, while also developing new demand fulfillment products, such as its newly implemented Instant Deals service.

O’Shaughnessy continued his remarks by explaining that LivingSocial's culture plays a large role in its success. The company currently employs about 1,300 people and is adding about 150 new employees per month, with a less than 1 percent voluntary turnover rate in non-sales employees. With this level of growth, O'Shaughnessy stressed the importance of having everyone on the same page, recruiting for both core competencies and a good cultural fit, as well as supporting an entrepreneurial mindset among employees. He stated his hope that LivingSocial can serve as a breeding ground for entrepreneurs and help spur growth of new companies in the region.

O'Shaughnessy also explained that maintaining the company’s growth by successfully scaling its local commerce business model is the biggest challenge for the next year. He concluded by expressing his desire for LivingSocial to become the next major Web brand, as well-known as "the Facebooks, the Googles of the world."

The morning ended with a lively question-and-answer session during which O'Shaughnessy addressed the company’s recruiting strategies, data analytics as an increasingly powerful asset, and how LivingSocial will continue to focus on innovation in order to differentiate it from its competitors.

Gov. McDonnell Signs Top NVTC Legislative Priorities Supporting Virginia's Growing Innovation Economy

Gov. McDonnell ceremonially signs the first part of his
"Opportunity at Work" legislative agenda on Wednesday.
At an event at the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park in Richmond on Wednesday, April 6, Gov. Bob McDonnell ceremonially signed the first part of his "Opportunity at Work" legislative agenda, which includes several of NVTC's legislative priorities. The 10 measures signed at the event are designed to attract new businesses to the Commonwealth and help to grow and expand existing businesses in Virginia.

NVTC maintained a full-time presence in Richmond throughout the 2011 Virginia legislative session to actively advocate on behalf of Northern Virginia's technology community. During the session, the General Assembly approved many of NVTC's specific legislative priorities, as outlined in an NVTC letter to policymakers before this session began, and several other technology-related bills that were sent to Gov. McDonnell for action. In addition, NVTC advocated for, and the General Assembly passed, an appropriation of an additional $4 million to the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) seed-stage GAP Fund, which attracts private capital to enable the formation and establishment of new high-growth technology companies and university spin-outs.

Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling; Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng; Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey; Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson; Senior Economic Advisor Bob Sledd; President & CEO of the Center for Innovative Technology Pete Jobse; Sens. Mark Herring (D-Leesburg) and Frank Ruff (R- Clarksville); and Delegates Rich Anderson (R-Woodbridge), Mark Cole (R-Fredericksburg), Barbara Comstock (R-McLean), L. Scott Lingamfelter (R-Prince William) and Chris Peace (R-Mechanicsville) joined Gov. McDonnell for the event. The legislation signed on Wednesday includes:

Sen. Mark Herring (D-Leesburg) shakes Gov. McDonnell's hand after he
signed the bill for a $5 million refundable R&D income tax credit.
  • HB 1447 - Delegate Cline
    SB 1326 - Sen. Herring

After five years of advocacy, NVTC was instrumental in achieving passage this year of a $5 million refundable R&D income tax credit. This $5 million targeted R&D income tax credit, for startups and early-stage firms, will promote innovation and job creation across Virginia, enhance Virginia's competitiveness as a preferred location for research and boost industry-sponsored research and collaboration with Virginia's universities. More than 18,000 technology firms make R&D investments across the United States, and this legislation encourages them to consider Virginia as a welcoming home for their future investment.

  • HB 2324 - Delegate Lingamfelter
SB 1485 - Sens. Newman and Herring

The General Assembly approved NVTC-backed legislation to expand Virginia's Commonwealth Research Commercialization Fund (CRCF) and appropriated $6 million in new funding to accelerate entrance of new products and services to the market, incentivize collaboration between research universities and businesses in high-growth, emerging industries, provide matching funds to SBIR grant recipients and provide new resources to attract eminent researchers at Virginia universities.

  • HB 1982 - Delegates Kilgore, Torian, Miller and Armstrong
SB 1379 - Sens. Stanley and Barker

This NVTC-supported legislation gives Gov. McDonnell more flexibility in providing incentives to businesses seeking to relocate or expand in Virginia and creates special eligibility categories for large data center and critical technology infrastructure businesses and emerging technology projects.

For more information about the bills above, and other bills that passed this year's General Assembly, read the most recent edition of Tech Politic, NVTC's public policy news update. To view video footage from last Wednesday's event, click here.

THIS FRIDAY, Voice Your Ideas About an NVTC Cybersecurity Committee!

Cybersecurity will be a dominating tech topic for 2011 and beyond across all industries. NVTC has an enormous opportunity to demonstrate that this region is a major player in the advancement of cybersecurity solutions and overall awareness. Many other regions are promoting their cybersecurity efforts but none have the quantity or quality of security experts, government executives, integrators and vendors that the NVTC membership has to offer.

Though NVTC has regularly addressed cybersecurity issues through a number of its committees, its Titans events, and its magazine, many NVTC members have expressed interest in developing a stand-alone committee dedicated to this topic. Before forging ahead, we want to hear your suggestions regarding topics and direction as well as your opinions on the viability of a dedicated committee.

Join us this Friday, April 15 for a brown bag lunch to discuss the potential of creating an NVTC Cybersecurity Committee. To join us, email Samantha Unger, NVTC programs assistant, at sunger@nvtc.org.

The panelists discussed the current environment for small companies looking to enter the government market, whether or not it is more challenging than in the past, the best way for a small contractor to get noticed by a federal agency and the common pitfalls small companies fall into. Following the discussion, audience members engaged in a question and answer session with the panelists.
