Region's Top Universities Present Technology Research at Feb. 24 NVTC University Technology Exhibition; Rolls-Royce N.A. President and CEO James Guyette Promotes Innovation and Partnerships to Improve U.S. Competitiveness

University and technology company attendees in the exhibit
hall at the NVTC University Technology Exhibition.
Last Thursday, February 24, more than 200 attendees from regional universities and technology companies gathered at the Hilton McLean for the inaugural NVTC University Technology Exhibition to explore the incredible potential of technology transfer, commercialization, licensing, and research and development.

During the event, five universities led breakout presentations on their latest technology research, including:

  • George Mason University: Computer visioning to obtain segmental motion data and using haptics to document functional movement in people with and without disabilities; research related to the biological threat that comes from bacteria, viruses or toxins; and geographic information systems.
  • The George Washington University: Transformative energy technology concepts; surface and multi-layered texturing; and potentially self-healing technology for wind turbines.
  • University of Virginia: Real-time interaction between ambulances and emergency rooms, unmanned vehicle surveillance systems for the U.S. military, smart building technology to control HVAC systems with sensors, and scanning three-dimensional objects to create 3-D graphics.
  • Virginia Commonwealth University: Stem-cell engineering; translating how the human brain operates into designing smarter algorithms and systems; biologically-inspired face recognition system; and cybersecurity.
  • Virginia Tech: Cyber infrastructure; network modeling; systems biology; and medical informatics and systems.

In addition, the event included a trade show with exhibits from George Mason University; The George Washington University; James Madison University; Johns Hopkins University; University of Maryland; University of Virginia; Virginia Commonwealth University; and Virginia Tech.

The luncheon portion of the exhibition opened with remarks from Virginia Secretary of Technology Jim Duffey, who highlighted the Commonwealth's immense opportunities in the cybersecurity sector. He also outlined several of Governor Bob McDonnell's economic development and job creation initiatives.

Rolls-Royce North America President and CEO James M. Guyette discussing innovation, partnerships and investments in Virginia during his luncheon keynote.
During his luncheon keynote, James M. Guyette, president and chief executive officer of Rolls-Royce North America, discussed American competitiveness, arguing that the country is falling behind in the global marketplace and needs to invest more in innovation. In comparison, he believes that Virginia is well-positioned to compete globally, noting the Commonwealth's pro-business policies, educated workforce and climate as key drivers to that success and Rolls-Royce's decisions to partner with the state and Virginia universities, including sending Virginia university students for Rolls-Royce internships in England, Germany, Singapore and other global locations.

Guyette continued by describing several of the company's recent major investments in Virginia, including the Crosspointe advanced manufacturing campus in Prince George County, the company's largest site in North America. The Crosspointe campus, which is creating 140 new locally recruited jobs, is home to the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), an industry-led facility for applied research and development founded. CCAM brings together best-in-class manufacturers and the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech to collaborate and deliver production-ready solutions to factories. He also described the Commonwealth Center for Aerospace Propulsion Systems (CCAPS), a virtual research and technology center of excellence established by the same partners, which is also located on the Crosspointe campus, stating that "university research is critical for us."

Guyette concluded his remarks by calling for increased innovation, partnerships and investments similar to those Rolls-Royce has undertaken in Virginia to ensure America can compete on a global level.
