Orbital Sciences Corporation and Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority Reach New Agreement on Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport
On September 18, Gov. Bob McDonnell announced that NVTC member company Orbital Sciences Corporation and the Virginia Commercial Space Flight Authority (VCSFA) have reached a new agreement regarding their partnership at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS).
Orbital previously partnered with the VCSFA to develop and construct improvements, expected to be completed later this month, to the launch facility at MARS in order to accommodate Orbital’s Antares™ rocket launches. With this new agreement, Orbital will launch 10 Antares missions from MARS, including one test flight, one demonstration flight and eight resupply missions to the International Space Station. The Commonwealth has agreed to fund completion of the improvements at MARS to support the Antares missions and those of future customers.
The VCSFA is a nonprofit organization created in 1995 by the Virginia General Assembly to promote industry and economic development and to enhance scientific and technology education, primarily through the operations of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS). VCSFA and MARS offer low-cost, safe and reliable space access to commercial, government, scientific and academic users.
