NVTC Commends Court of Appeals of Virginia for Upholding Anti-Spam Law
HERNDON, VA., Sept. 6, 2006 – The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) is releasing this statement on behalf of NVTC President and CEO Bobbie Kilberg regarding yesterday's decision by the Court of Appeals of Virginia to uphold the first conviction under the Commonwealth's anti-spamming law."As an advocate of anti-spamming legislation and an outspoken proponent of the Virginia law, the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) commends the Court of Appeals of Virginia for its decision to uphold the conviction of the first individual sentenced for criminal spamming in the nation. NVTC congratulates Attorney General Bob McDonnell and his legal team for their leadership and good work on behalf of the business community in Northern Virginia and consumers residing and working in the Commonwealth. Approximately 40 percent of the nation's Internet traffic passes through Virginia-the highest in the world. Passage of the statute was an NVTC legislative priority because the unchecked growth of criminal spam imposes an outrageously high price tag on Internet service providers, costs which are then transferred to their subscribers; paralyzes already clogged commercial and consumer communications channels; hinders employee productivity; and negatively affects the bottom line of any company that uses the Internet or e-mail communications. U.S. companies are being forced to spend billions of dollars each year to upgrade server capacity and implement other technology solutions to filter the barrage of unsolicited, unwanted junk e-mails-and consumers are being forced to absorb these costs."
