HERNDON, Va., July 14, 2006 - Northern Virginia Technology Council Recognizes Local Entrepreneurial Companies With 'Hot Ticket Awards'HERNDON, Va., July 14, 2006 - Local technology companies Avectra, Deltek, Neustar, SunRocket and WeatherBug were named winners at the fifth annual Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) 'Hot Ticket Awards' last night at a celebration of over 450 executives from the technology community.
The Hot Ticket Awards recognize the efforts of local entrepreneurial companies and individuals of the technology community who have exhibited "something special" - great vision, the ability to implement and deliver results, an innovative management approach or star-quality charisma.
"We received a record number of nominations this year, and that is a testament to the continued strength of the technology entrepreneurs in the region," said NVTC President Bobbie Kilberg. "The winners and finalists exemplify all the great traits of our local technology community and NVTC is proud to recognize their accomplishments."
An independent panel of judges from the local business community reviewed the finalists in each category and selected one winner for each award.
The winners of the 2006 Hot Ticket Awards are:
Hottest Bootstrap - Avectra. This award goes to the company that has built a significant presence or shown tremendous growth potential without relying on institutional investors. Avectra's founder started with $5,000, turned a profit in the company's third month, and now has a top line of more than $15 million in revenues with year-over-year growth rate of 30 percent.
Hottest Buzz - WeatherBug. This award goes to the company or individual who receives the best, or in some cases the most, coverage in the media and in business discussions around town. WeatherBug won the Hottest Buzz because of the overwhelming endorsement of WeatherBug as the nation's leading source for Internet-based weather information.
Hottest Exit - NeuStar. This award goes to a company that was acquired, merged or went public. NeuStar won the Hottest Exit as its stock offering was 12 times oversubscribed, it demonstrated strong stock performance (up 58 percent) and had a large secondary offering.
Hottest Management Team - Deltek. This award goes to teams that have a sound business strategy and approach, work well together to complement one another, and have the greatest potential to carry out their company's core mission. Deltek won because it assembled an all-star team in the software industry - spanning PeopleSoft, Aspect Communications, Novell, Hyperion and BearingPoint - who have come together with Deltek veterans to execute an aggressive business plan.
Hottest Venture Capital Deal - SunRocket. This award goes to the company that offers the most all-around potential for return-on-investment - a strong management team, great buzz and a winning product or service. SunRocket won the Hottest Venture Capital Deal because of the amount of capital raised, the company valuation, and competition of funds inside and outside the region to get into the deal.
