Groundhog Job Shadow Day

Registration Deadline for Host Volunteers:
Friday, March 12, 2010

Event Date:
April 9, 2010

The Northern Virginia Technology Council, in conjunction with Fairfax County Public Schools, will host its 12th annual "Groundhog Job Shadow Day" on Friday, April 9, 2010.

NVTC's Groundhog Job Shadow Day program gives students the opportunity to "shadow" executives, technology workers, and workers that support the technology industry within NVTC member companies as they go through a normal day on the job. Job shadowing provides students an up-close look at how the skills they learn in school are put into action in the workplace, reinforcing the connection between academic achievement and career planning. At the same time, employers gain awareness of the potential talent of their future workforce in our local high schools and have the opportunity to assist high school students in their career planning.

Many thanks to NVTC members who have accepted the challenge and to those who have participated in NVTC's Groundhog Job Shadow Day in the past. Because of their generosity, the participation level has increased dramatically over the past seven years, with 20 students participating the first year to over 170 students participating in recent years.

There is no cost to member companies who participate. Volunteers are needed in a myriad of traditional career fields (accounting/finance/HR/etc.) but especially in the following areas: all aspects affecting homeland security/defense, engineering, graphic/web design, digital imaging, multimedia/TV production, network/computer security, nanotechnology, biotech, health technology, aerospace, PC support/Help Desk, Cisco, Oracle and any other career field where you will have future needs. Start-up companies are encouraged to volunteer so that students see the importance of entrepreneurship in this region.

If you have registered to be an employer host/volunteer and have not been contacted, please call Cara Kirby at 703-303-2128.
