Securing the Nation - An Industry Perspective

On Friday, February 11, about 640 attendees gathered at The Ritz-Carlton in Tysons Corner for the latest NVTC Titans breakfast featuring Northrop Grumman CEO and President Wes Bush. In his speech, Securing the Nation: An Industry Perspective, Bush explained that the defense industry will be faced with a loss of innovation and increased competition without an aggressive push to strategically manage the defense industrial base.

addressing about 640 Titans attendees on Friday.

According to Bush, "the dynamic range of threats facing our nation and its interests is unparalleled in our history." He also expressed his belief that the lack of new start programs will have negative consequences on the defense industrial base's ability to build and maintain critical skills in the future.

To address these threats and challenges, Bush argued that the government customer must make clear, focused decisions about which defense industrial capabilities are critical to the long-term security of the nation. In addition, government must work with industry to drive investment to maintaining or building those capabilities, including promoting the influx of top technical and management talent.

Bush also stated his belief that broadening export markets is important to sustaining the defense industrial base and increasing its competitiveness, urging the government to reshape export control policies to support the "commodity of innovation." He stated that much of our capability can be maintained and expanded by lifting many of the export controls off American defense companies, contending that the government should focus on putting "higher walls around fewer things."

In closing, Bush called for clarity from the Department of Defense, because a clear framework will allow the defense industry to better chart strategies to remain competitive in the future. The morning ended with a question-and-answer session during which Bush addressed channeling technology investments into adaptable technology levels and readiness, as well as leveraging defense industrial base solutions into critical infrastructure protection and preparedness.
