A Russian Cyber Threat Intelligence Report by FireEye
Join NVTC's Cybersecurity Committee for an event featuring key stakeholders in national cybersecurity. In 2013, the Madiant Corporation (now FireEye) produced the APT1 Report focusing on threat actors in China. This techniques and staff used to construct this report were used by DHS, FBI, and even in congressional subcommittees. At the event on Dec. 4, Jordan Berry, a threat intelligence analyst with FireEye, will provide a comprehensive review of APT28, their newest report. Attendees will gain valuable insights as to how Russia’s capabilities are posing an increasing threat to our national security concerns, and how the private sector is adding great value to public sector’s cyber threat intelligence collection capabilities.
In this session, the following core talking points will be discussed:
- In contrast to China-based threat actors that FireEye tracks, APT28 does not appear to conduct widespread intellectual property theft for economic gain. Instead, APT28 focuses on collecting intelligence that would be most useful to a government, which we assess to be Russia.
- Since at least 2007, APT28 has been targeting privileged information related to governments, militaries and security organizations that would likely benefit the Russian government.
- In analyzing the malware, FireEye identified several samples containing details that indicate the developers are Russian language speakers operating during business hours that are consistent with the time zone of Russia’s major cities. FireEye also found that APT28 has systematically evolved its malware since at least 2007, using flexible and lasting platforms that analysts believe indicate plans for long-term use.
