John Chambers Keynotes Star-Studded Evening: TechCelebration
Lights, camera, technology! Last night, NVTC's TechCelebration lived up to its reputation as the networking event of the year as 900 members of the Northern Virginia technology community joined Virginia state officials and federal and state legislators for an evening on the red carpet. The star-studded event included a keynote speech by Cisco Chairman & CEO John Chambers, introduced by John Edwardson, CEO of CDW, and the presentation of the 2010 NVTC Chairman's Award to business leader and former NVTC Chair Dan Bannister.
During his remarks, Chambers discussed technology's role in global innovation and U.S. competitiveness, citing education, infrastructure, innovation, supportive government and collaboration as pillars of American competitiveness. He explained that technology enables work and collaboration in a dynamic networked organization by allowing businesses to deliver work to people instead of people traveling to the workplace. Chambers also argued that while innovation and operational excellence are both crucially important, "operational excellence always trumps innovation." Looking ahead, Chambers predicted that by 2014, more than 90 percent of all consumer Internet traffic will be video, and that video communications traffic will increase sevenfold. Concluding his remarks, he challenged government and business to work together to restore our economy and improve U.S. competitiveness.
As a highlight of the program, former NVTC Chairs Ed Bersoff, ATS Corporation, and Dave Lucien, DCL Associates, paid tribute to former NVTC Chair Dan Bannister on behalf of all the former NVTC Chairs who joined them in presenting to Dan the 2010 NVTC Chairman's Award.
The NVTC Chairman's Award is presented for exceptional contributions and service to the Northern Virginia technology community. During his tenure as NVTC Chair, Bannister used his knowledge of this region and the resources of his company DynCorp to help springboard NVTC into a nationally recognized organization. In addition to his commitment to the region's technology business community, NVTC recognized Bannister for his civic and philanthropic accomplishments, including his role as a founder of NVTC's Equal Footing Foundation (EFF). Other past recipients of the NVTC Chairman's Award include Governor Tim Kaine (2009), Congressman Tom Davis (2008) and Senator John Warner (2007).
In recognition of his contributions to the Foundation's Computer Clubhouse program, NVTC announced the establishment of the Dan R. Bannister Computer Clubhouse Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships to Clubhouse students for study at all post-secondary educational programs, ranging from universities and four-year colleges through community colleges and technical programs.
