Sever Totia

Sever Totia is responsible for leading investments in enterprise software and business services companies primarily located in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia area. He focuses on software sectors including business intelligence, securing the enterprise, mobility, real-time infrastructure, information services and on-demand applications.

Totia is active in the venture community as president of the Young Atlantic Venture Association, and he also serves on venture committees for MAVA, Deloitte & Touche Technology Venture Center (TVC), Maryland Incubator and National Sciences Foundation Tech Program. Totia is a Chartered Financial Analyst and a member of the CFA Institute. He holds a B.S. in finance from Virginia Tech.

Hooks Johnston

Hooks Johnston has had success as both an operating executive and as a venture capital investor. He has 20 years of experience in senior leadership roles at venture capital firms and technology companies in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Prior to founding Valhalla Partners, Johnston was a managing director at FBR Technology Venture Partners (FBRTVP). The FBRTVP funds produced seven IPOs, including webMethods, the most successful software IPO in history.

Johnston is on the boards of Exchange Solutions, Inc., Flat World Knowledge, KZO Innovations, Persystent Technologies and SEPATON, Inc. He also led Valhalla's investments in Verical, Inc. (acquired by Arrow Electronics, Inc. - NYSE:ARW), MiserWare and ServiceBench (sold to N.E.W.). He is currently a board member of the Northern Virginia Technology Council, Five Talents International, and serves on the Virginia Innovation and Entrepreneurship Investment Authority and the INOVA Health Services Board.

Hooks received an M.B. A. from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business and a B.S. in applied mathematics and economics from Brown University.

Ted Lauer
SVP and SBA Department Manager

Ted Lauer is an SVP/SBA Department Manager, with Reston-based Access National, a local community bank. Lauer has held various lending and management positions, in his 25-year career, most notably with Crestar Bank, Maryland National, Patriot National, and for the last 10 years, with Access National Bank. Lauer was in charge of SBA Lending at Patriot and leveraged that experience to spearhead a similar program at Access. In fact, Lauer's efforts were recently recognized by the SBA, as Access National was named the largest dollar volume lender for the 7a Program in the SBA's Metropolitan Washington District for the calendar year ending September 30, 2010. Lauer was personally honored as SBA's Financial Services Champion of the Year in June 2010.



Edmund Pendleton
Serial Entrepreneur and Angel Investor


Edmund Pendleton is a business owner, entrepreneur, and angel investor. He has founded or co-founded several businesses, primarily in high-tech markets, with successful exits. He is also active in several Washington, D.C. area angel investment and entrepreneurial organizations.

His primary business experience and interests include technology innovation, product development and management, sales and marketing, and entrepreneurship. Pendleton also has extensive experience in technology consulting, manufacturing, and architecture/ engineering/construction.

Pendleton acts as an advisor and Board member for several technology startups, and frequently serves as a mentor and coach for several domestic and international business incubator programs. He is also an active volunteer in Arlington, Va. public schools and youth sports.

He earned an S.M. in management from the Sloan School of Management at MIT, with concentrations in technology innovation and entrepreneurship, and an S.M. in civil engineering from MIT with a concentration in engineering management. He also holds a B.S. in physics and mathematics from the College of William and Mary, and served as a Rotary Foundation Scholar in New Zealand while completing graduate studies in astronomy.



Nancy McCarthy

Nancy McCarthy has built a sales and management career spanning more than 20 years with leading Fortune 100 companies. She is viewed as an expert in sales, business development, strategic relationship building, and client relationship management for professionals in service organizations, tech companies and knowledge-based industries. McCarthy's clients are Fortune 500, Inc. 500 and Inc. 5,000 as well as others working to attain those levels.

McCarthy specializes in developing stronger leaders and making Rainmakers out of high performers who want to take their game to the next level and substantially increase revenue. She has had great success working with CEOs, executive teams, professionals, sales/ business development and non-sales team members to help them become stronger leaders and help the company grow.

McCarthy held positions as VP, director of channel sales for North America, manager and salesperson. She now consults and coaches other companies to build their profitable, sustainable revenue and grow their companies. McCarthy holds a B.S. in business with work toward her M.B.A. at the University of Maryland.

Steve Britt

Steve Britt is a corporate and technology attorney and a partner at the law firm of Leach Travell Britt, pc in Tysons Corner. Britt's practice focuses on software and online media companies and he also represents government contractors in the intelligence space.

Britt currently serves as co-chair of NVTC's Technology Innovations Committee and serves on the Selection Committee of the Business Alliance. He is on the steering committee of NVTC's The Entrepreneur Center Entrepreneur Spotlight program.

Steve obtained his B.S. in business and economics, cum laude, and his J.D. from West Virginia University, Order of the Coif. He practiced law in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh before his appointment to a series of senior federal regulatory appointments in the Reagan and Bush Administrations.

Bill Bonk

Bill Bonk is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Since 1994, he has counseled domestic and foreign individuals and businesses regarding intellectual property matters. He has helped to secure, enforce and negotiate agreements respecting hundreds of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets.

In 2005, Bonk formed Emerging Strategies to provide a less transactional and more holistic approach to business involving intellectual property issues throughout product/service commercial life cycles. Emerging Strategies uniquely melds intellectual property and market research intelligence to aid clients in optimal product configuration and market deployment.

Bonk has worked with universities to increase licensing and spin-off opportunities. He has also participated in university-originated, technology-based business plan competitions as an adjudicating panel member, speaker and mentor.

Bonk is a member of the Michigan State Bar and the American Bar Association, including the Intellectual Property Law Sections of each. He is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association and served as an editor on its Trademark/Unfair Competition Litigation Committee. Bonk presents seminars on intellectual property and product development at technical conferences and universities. Bonk graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering and graduated cum laude from Michigan State University Law School.

June Jewell, CPA, founded Jewell & Associates in 1990 and grew a successful consulting practice supporting the Wind2 Financial Management System. In 2005, Deltek purchased Wind2, and Jewell & Associates quickly rose to become Deltek's most successful partner. Jewell & Associates merged with Innovative Solutions Group (ISG) in 2010 to become Deltek's largest and most successful partner. Jewell's focus at Acumen Advisors is on client relationships and business development. She is constantly working to leverage her relationships by introducing clients to others that offer potential value for business partnerships.

As an assistant professorial lecturer at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C., Jewell taught accounting to undergraduate and M.B.A. students. She has also co-authored several books including, Selecting Time Billing and Job Accounting Software.



Patricia Mejia

Patricia Mejia has more than 15 years' experience helping public, private and not-for-profit organizations improve the quality, consistency and clarity of their marketing and communications. Mejia is passionate about all topics related to interactive marketing (social media, search engine optimization, mobile, etc.), as well as the more tactical components of marketing and sales such as marketing automation and CRM. At Siteworx, Mejia is responsible for marketing, public relations, lead generation, inside sales and analyst relations.

Prior to Siteworx, Mejia served as vice president of marketing & communications at IXI T Corporation (acquired by Equifax), a McLean-based database marketing consortium. Mejia holds a master's degree in public administration from George Mason University and a B.A. in government and politics from the University of Maryland.

E. Wayne Jackson, III, CEO of Sonatype, Inc., is the creator of popular open source projects such as Maven and Nexus that are transforming software development.

Prior to joining Sonatype, Jackson served as a director and advisor to some of the Washington, D.C. region's most innovative technology companies including JackBe, Netuitive, Zenoss, Triumfant and Alternative Fuels Group. Through July 2008, Jackson was the CEO of open source network security pioneer Sourcefire, Inc., which he guided from fledgling startup through IPO in March 2007 at a valuation of approximately $450 million. Before joining Sourcefire, Jackson co-founded Riverbed Technologies, a wireless infrastructure company, and served as CEO until the sale of the company for more than $1 billion in March 2000. Prior to Riverbed, Jackson built a sophisticated emerging-technologies profit center for a large systems integrator and provided consulting services to organizations including General Electric, The World Bank and the Federal Reserve.

Jackson holds a B.B.S in finance from James Madison University, and has completed the executive education program for corporate governance at Harvard University.

Today, Parature's Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product suite supports nearly 20 million end users worldwide in diverse industries from national associations, leading educational institutions, gaming and interactive media, manufacturing, services and technology companies.

Chung is recognized as one of the top up-and-coming entrepreneurs in the Greater Washington Metropolitan region and has been widely recognized for pioneering innovation with such honors as being named to Fast Company's Fast 50, The Washingtonian's Power 150 as a "rising star" and most recently to the Bisnow on Business "Top 35 under 35 Entrepreneur" in the Washington region. Chung's insight to recognize the true benefits of providing a service over the Internet and the realization of strategies in which the Internet can improve the way business is done has been the foundation for how Parature was built.

Chung is a frequent speaker at industry events and conferences throughout the country, including the Darden School of Business, Georgetown University, University of Maryland, Netpreneur, SearchCRM and Potomac Executive Biz. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Monte Jade Science & Technology Association.

Chung holds a B.S. in operations research and industrial engineering from Cornell University.



Ben Petro

Ben Petro is a proven leader who has earned his outstanding reputation by repeatedly creating sustained value in a number of high-growth businesses. Petro joined VeriSign, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSN) in April 2010 from Teneros, where he served as president and chief executive officer from May 2008 through April 2010. During his time at Teneros, Petro completed a business overhaul on behalf of the Board of Directors. He repositioned the company from a hardware provider to a service provider earning Microsoft Partner of the year for SaaS disaster recovery and moving gross margin from -8 percent to 63 percent. He also instituted a high-growth direct sales team successful in penetrating F500 and SME market segments.

Prior to Teneros, Petro was SVP for Ultra Services, for NeuStar, Inc. (NYSE: NSR), following NeuStar's acquisition of UltraDNS Corporation in April 2006. Petro was president and CEO of UltraDNS since 2001 and he grew UltraDNS into a profitable, high-growth company that provided infrastructure solutions to more than 20 percent of the Internet and thousands of global enterprises.

Ben was vice president of marketing at Edge Connections prior to joining UltraDNS, where he was responsible for creating and implementing its national brand and deploying a strategy for its service offering. He forged key strategic alliances necessary for the company's subsequent long-term growth. As director of marketing for Logix Communications, Petro successfully launched the company's CLEC/broadband services in more than 20 markets. He has also held highly-successful leadership positions in marketing and strategy at MCI Communications and QSI, a communications consulting firm.

Petro serves on the Board of Directors for Peerfluence, Inc. and is an investment partner with the San Francisco Arts Fund.
