September 27, 2010 NVTC convened an initial meeting of the NVTC Data Center and Critical Technology Infrastructure Task Force based on member interest.

Purpose: Discuss how NVTC can help ensure the current and future competitiveness of data centers and critical IT infrastructure in Virginia and provide more value to this important community.

Conclusion: NVTC would establish a Data Center and Critical Technology Infrastructure Task Force to serve as a venue for the data center community.

Goals:
  1. Discuss and address short and long term challenges to the ongoing competitiveness of the industry in Virginia, including how the Commonwealth measures up in terms of affordable and available energy, workforce, taxes and regulation, and cost.
  2. Bolster NVTC's representation on behalf of data center and critical IT infrastructure companies, especially in the area of state public policy advocacy.
  3. Promote policies and initiatives to increase data center investment and expansion throughout Virginia.
The Task Force concluded with a consensus that energy issues were a top priority for the data center community. Specifically of concern was the cost of power, stability of prices and future predictability of rates, the reliability of energy capacity and future generating capacity, energy infrastructure, and the methods by which energy is generated.


February 15, 2011
The second meeting of the Task Force was hosted by Dominion. Tom Farrell, Chairman, President & CEO of Dominion Resources, Paul Koonce, CEO of Dominion Virginia Power, and several other Dominion executives participated in a discussion regarding energy-related issues with Task Force members.

Objectives:
    1. To learn Dominion's perspective on data centers as customers and as economic drivers 2. To learn about Dominion's short and long term plans re energy production, infrastructure and cost 3. To discuss opportunities for partnership and collaboration
Conclusion: Task Force members and Dominion representatives resolved to continue discussions on energy-related issues.

April 29, 2011
The third Task Force meeting featured a briefing by Virginia Secretary of Commerce and Trade Jim Cheng on the Governor's economic development goals, priorities and incentives as they relate to data center investment and expansion across Virginia. The meeting also included a briefing on Governor McDonnell's Cybersecurity Initiative from Deputy Secretary of Technology Aaron Mathes and Assistant Secretary of Technology and Senior Policy Advisor Cameron Kilberg.
