Focus on GSA – Marketing Strategies for Small Business

The NVTC B2G Committee, in conjunction with the Coalition for Government Procurement, conducted a successful event on Wednesday, October 11, 2006 titled GSA and Today’s Federal IT Marketplace. This event featured John Johnson, Acting Assistant Commissioner, GSA Office of Integrated Technology Solutions; Christy L. Jackiewicz, Procurement Analyst, GSA Office of Small Business Utilization; Ray Bjorklund, Federal Sources; and Larry Allen, Coalition for Government Procurement.

The presentations from this event can be found at the NVTC B2G Committee - Event Archives.

Christy Jackiewicz discussed how Small Businesses can market effectively to the federal government. She advised that small businesses needed an effective marketing plan to ensure that their first encounter with federal customers exceeds the expectation of each customer (government buyer).

According to Christy, the key to preparing a successful marketing plan involves the following steps:

  • Determine - Your Niche
  • Research - Identify Competition/Benchmark
  • Develop - Marketing Plan
  • Outshine - The Competition
  • Set Goals - Ambitious but Attainable
  • Measure - Develop Measurable Strategies

Resources:

Optimize Opportunities:

  • Develop Contractor Teaming Relationships
  • Initiate Blanket Purchase Agreements
  • Increase Employee Retention
  • Improve Customer Service
  • Accept Social Responsibility
  • Expand Conference Participation

Real Estate Update

You’ve seen it. You’ve read about it. The cranes are back again. Just five years after the last cycle’s oversupply of office space in the Dulles Corridor, developers have broken ground on nearly four million square feet of new office space in about forty buildings, and only 700,000 square feet (or 18%) is pre-leased. The Dulles Corridor historically registers one million square feet of net absorption (the difference between space that gets occupied and space that gets vacated) each year; at it’s peak, the market absorbs a net of 1.5 million square feet. Therefore, in addition to the 700,000 square feet that’s pre-leased, the market needs to lease another one million square feet in addition to the market average of two million square feet in the next two years just to maintain current market rates.

Insurance Update

When a Government Contractor bids on a new contract some portion of indirect, or sometimes direct, costs can come from insurance policies. For example, labor rates will usually include a load or factor for the contractor’s Workers’ Compensation (WC) insurance costs. Three best practices can help the contractor better estimate the actual final cost, and more accurately bid the job. Failure to do so can reduce the profitability of the contract, or worse.
