The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC) is the membership and trade association for the technology community in Northern Virginia and is the largest technology council in the nation. NVTC has about 1100 member companies representing more than 200,000. Its membership includes companies from all sectors of the technology industry including information technology, software/hardware, Internet, ISPs, telecommunications, biotechnology, bioinformatics, aerospace, and nanotechnology, as well as the service providers that play an important role in supporting these companies. In addition, universities, foreign embassies, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies are members and take an active participation in meeting NVTC goals and objectives.
NVTC has transitioned from a start-up association to a very mature and respected organization, with mature relationships at the regional, state, national, and global levels. As such, its goals have also matured as reflected below.
Mission
NVTC will continue to be the nation's leader in providing its technology community with networking and educational events, specialized services and benefits, public policy advocacy, branding of its region as a major global technology center, promotion of state and regional economic development, initiatives in targeted business sectors and in the international, entrepreneurship, workforce and education arenas, and a Foundation focusing on venture philanthropy and public/private partnerships.
Goals
NVTC will continue to focus the energy and talents of our staff and members on eight technology-related objectives for the next biennium and enhance their value to our membership. The objectives listed below must be achieved within the capacity of NVTC to raise revenue and manage expenses. While balancing our priorities, NVTC will have a significant, measurable impact on the following:
- Content-rich, high-quality networking and educational opportunities, programs, events, and forums designed to bring the membership constituents together.
- Communication of programs, opportunities, regional, national and global activities, and benefits of NVTC membership to both our membership and other relevant constituencies.
- Public Policy advocacy and awareness at the regional and state level with involvement at the national and international level based upon specific needs. Continued support of the NVTC TechPAC.
- Creation of international business opportunities for member companies and the promotion of the region as a global technology center through active participation in international activities.
- Leadership on workforce-related educational development and on other specific workforce-related public policy issues facing the technology industry.
- Involvement of our technology community in:
- Promoting economic development throughout the Commonwealth;
- Enhancing productivity, effectiveness and competitiveness in business, government, and education;
- Providing, through the Equal Footing Foundation, technology-related educational and community service programs in Northern Virginia; and
- Partnering with other organizations to support these objectives.
- Entrepreneurship in the region through promoting the growth and success of entrepreneurs.
- Enhancement of specialized member services and benefits.
Balance Our Priorities
- Membership enrollment and retention are the primary source of revenue each year. Membership expansion, enrichment and retention are therefore a primary objective.
- Equally important, revenue raised through programs and sponsorships should be considered an income-producing priority to meet the goals specified.
- The annual budget should reflect the prioritization of the goals.
- Staff and other expenses should be aligned to the goals and change when the goals change or there is a change in the priorities.
- Every opportunity should be taken to align the annual agenda of programs with the goals and attempt, through active participation of our committees, to make programs self-sufficient.
Method of Operation
- Providing value to our membership is the core of NVTC activity.
- Active involvement of the NVTC Board of Directors in recruitment of members, raising of revenue, and participation in programs and activities is vital to our success.
- NVTC depends upon the active participation of member companies and their employees for its success. Members provide their time, financial support, and organizational and subject-matter expertise which are key to the effective operation of NVTC.
- NVTC partners with other organizations to accomplish our mission.
