Gerald M. Rubin, Ph.D., is a vice president at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and director of HHMI's Janelia Farm Research Campus in Loudoun County, Virginia. He is currently engaged in developing the scientific program for this facility, which is under construction and scheduled to open in mid-2006.

An HHMI investigator at the University of California, Berkeley, since 1987, Rubin led the effort to sequence the entire genome of the fruit fly Drosophila. His laboratory also has determined the function of a number of fruit-fly genes that have human genetic counterparts. He moved to HHMI headquarters in 2000 to become vice president for biomedical research, but still maintains a research laboratory at Berkeley.
